Today we announce that more than 350 organisations, experts and citizens from Australia and around the world, have called for an urgent moratorium on Waste Incineration in Australia.
As such we have written to the Australian Federal Governments Ministerial Cabinet and MP’s to declare this global support and to demand an urgent moratorium on waste incineration in Australia.
We urge the Federal Minister for the Environment Murray Watts to intervene immediately to establish a full independent inquiry into the operations, impacts and full financial and legal consequence of introducing this industry into Australia.
Australia needs a moratorium on this industry so that a level playing field can be created to allow safer and more sustainable residual waste management technologies to establish.
A whopping 204 million tonnes of climate pollution is already expected from existing projects in the pipeline. With states laying the groundwork for many more projects, this figure is set to increase and cause a major climate and toxic air pollution bomb for Australia.
Scientists, experts, academics and communities from all over the world understand the foreseeable and preventable adverse impacts that a largescale waste incineration industry in Australia will bring. They stand united with Australian communities in condemning this industrial pollution threat on our doorstep and call on our government to implement safer, more effective Zero Waste systems and alternative non combustion technologies to manage our residual waste.
